The layout of the underground system is determined by the demand for heat. This demand is influenced by the floor-area, heat insulation, the heating system and its annual operational period. The demand for heat ranges between 8 to 11 kW for an average family of 4 living in a well insulated, newly built house with 120 sqm floor space

The illustrations above show the heat distribution in the underground after a one-year heating period. Please note the importance of a heat pipe‘s angle of inclination: if the heat pipe arrangement is vertical, the pipes‘ mutual influence is high and the thermal gradient is low.
This is not the case with slanted heat pipes because the mutual influence is low and the thermal gradient is high. Thus the heat extraction is a lot more rewarding and the danger of freezing is significantly minimized.
